Sue Nichol — The Spirit of the Yorkshire Coast
Sue Nichol is an artist whose work is born from a profound connection with the Yorkshire landscape and the ever-changing character of the sea. Based in Sheffield, Sue has found a particular affinity with Staithes and the North Yorkshire coast, following in the footsteps of generations of artists who have been captivated by its rugged beauty, dramatic skies and restless waters. Working predominantly in oils, she paints with an expressive freedom that brings together rich colour, vigorous brushwork and sumptuous texture. Yet beneath the energy of her paintings lies something more intimate: a deep affection for the places she portrays and a desire to capture their atmosphere, rather than simply their appearance. Whether painting the power of the sea, the drama of the cliffs or the quiet poetry of the surrounding countryside, Sue creates work that draws the viewer into the landscape and invites them to share in her experience of it. As a Staithes Artist, her work forms part of a living artistic tradition, while her distinctive and contemporary voice ensures that the spirit of this remarkable coastline continues to find new expression. Sue also runs workshops for Chatsworth House and is a member of the prestigious Peak District Artisans.
